04.18.15 Record Store Day 7am–midnight

Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the third Saturday of April each year. Its purpose is to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store. The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world. Hundreds of recording and other artists participate in the day by making special appearances, performances, meet and greets with their fans, the holding of art exhibits, and the issuing of special vinyl and CD releases along with other promotional products to mark the occasion. Each store holds their own party for the day, making it a true celebration of the individuality of each store, and the place it holds in its community.

Good Records was the first DFW store to celebrate Record Store Day (also an owner of the brand due to their inclusion in AIMS) its inaugural year by also tying in their birthday with the festivities. Each year it has gotten gradually larger. April 18, 2015 marks the 8th annual Record Store Day. Good Records will open at 7am. As in years past Good Records will have food, libations, deejays, and live music throughout the day.

Pleasant Grove

time: 4pm

Pleasant Grove so named for a Dallas, Texas suburb, was formed by co-vocalists / guitarists Bret Egner and Marcus Striplin. They were drawn together by a vision to write and play music that captured raw melancholy melodies laid out over slow spacious rhythmic harmonies. After two years of talking and playing occasional reunion shows, Marcus Striplin, Bret Egner, Tony Hormilosa, Jeff Ryan, and Chris Mayes have announced they are reuniting and set a release date for a new record in 2015.

Pageantry

time: 6pm

Since its formation in the small music town of Denton, Pageantry has emerged as a riveting and unique voice in the Texas music scene with its chaotic blend of dream pop, odd-metered shoe-gaze and catchy lo-fi pop. "South By Southwest: Best of the Fest" - Huffington Post

iill

time: 9:30pm

"This is the band iill, and there's not another act in Dallas like them. Besides Greer, who delivers tweaked vocal effects, there's Alex Velte on a bank of synths and Robert Gracian on a purely electronic drum kit powered by a Roland sampler. Velte and Gracian are completely focused on their instruments, barely engaging the audience. They lay down the musical foundation and leave the theatrics to their captivating frontwoman." - Wanz Dover/Dallas Observer

Party Static

time: 10pm

an __________ ______ _____ _____ ____ band based on ____ & _____. "Party Static light up a room. With their five members carousing on stage and their scuzzy, nonsensical music, they're a band who truly lives up to their name. There's the locked-in, simple rhythm section of Billy Kuykendall and Alex Mitchell. There's the fuzzy riffing of Brett Michael Strawn. And then, of course, there are the two ladies of the group, Laura Harrell and Kjersten Funk, who manage to overpower the boys with their exuberant dancing and wild, carefree shouting. Every time they play, they're clearly having the time of their lives. And so too do their fans." -Jeremy Hallock/Dallas Observer

Sixteen Deluxe

time: 11pm

Inducted into the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2011, Sixteen Deluxe has traversed the globe whilst releasing records on Trance Syndicate, Warner Bros., and Sugar Fix Recordings. The band has recently reformed for good and are playing Dallas at Good Records for the first time since the late 90s.

"Much more than space rock, Sixteen Deluxe's incandescent fuzz-pedal pop electrified the town when it appeared in 1994." - Christopher Gray, Austin Chronicle

"This Austin quartet -- led by brash moptop Carrie Clark -- was a huggable headrush, giving shoegaze a punk kick and recording two of the 1990s' most pleasurably squalling albums (Backfeedmagnetbabe and Emits Showers of Sparks). An ill-fated match with Warner Bros. kept them a (very loud) secret." - Charles Aaron, SPIN August 2009

"...smartly employed noise and irresistible hooks...integrates indie-rock looseness, AM-radio pop sensibilities, and waves of color-splashed feedback into a slippery whole. Masterfully hiding excruciatingly loud guitars in catchy car-radio pop, the mix is so thorough, the loops of well-controlled feedback so fluid, that you really have to concentrate to realize how punishing the guitars actually are." - Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

To get in the spirit of things, Good Records Recordings in conjunction with Frenchie Smith Records and Classic Waxxx Records we are releasing the first new music from Sixteen Deluxe in 15 years. The two song 7" featuring "Hit It" and "Dexfield Park." It will come with a download card. It will be released nationally post Record Store Day but the first place you will be able to get it will be Good Records Dallas, TX in a limited color exclusive to RSD. Chris Penn, co-owner of Good Records, is excited to release this new music as he has been friends with the band since booking them as early as 1995. "It is an honor that they trusted us with their new babies as it were."

Derek Rogers

time: Midnight

Derek is a self proclaimed musician, husband, recording artist, sound manipulator, kicker of elves. His lovely music has been featured in Wire UK Magazine's Adventures In Sound And Music Radio Show.

His latest album "Depth/Detail of Processing" is dedicated to and inspired by the late Evan Chronister, long-time DFW underground music champion and friend and supporter of Derek (best known to me for his Static Encounters blog). This scene we are all part of survives and thrives because of people like Evan who give of their time and passion and talent, give and give and give, and never ask for anything in return but the joy in knowing they helped turn on others to something that's great and that they are passionate about. The Dallas Observer ran a nice tribute to Evan, and you can read it here: Dallas Observer Blog

The track "Matilda & Richmond" deals directly with EC's passing and uses field recordings from the period immediately following his death in order to ground the piece as close to EC's experience as is possible. Surely, he would have appreciated keeping the circle unbroken....
You Tube Video

We at Good Records would also like to dedicate this Record Store Day celebration to Evan Chronister and find it fitting to have Derek close out the day. Evan LOVED record stores more than anyone we have ever known. Record Store Day Every Day.
